Both Lexa's people and Clarke's people have been at war with each other for the entire of the 100 CW show, first season and first half of the second season. Lexa officially meets Clarke in Long Into an Abyss when Clarke goes to Lexa in order to put aside their differences and create peace between their people. They both respect each other very much and are shown to be alike in some ways. They shared a mutual respect and the task of leadership over their allied clans, often making hard decisions together. They kiss in Bodyguard of Lies; however, Clarke notes that she is not ready for a relationship so soon after Finn's death under Lexa's orders. Their relationship becomes strained after Blood Must Have Blood (Part 1), as Lexa betrays the Sky People by not marching forward on Mount Weather in order to save her own people. They reunite in Wanheda (Part 2). Clarke remained in Polis with Lexa until the her death in Thirteen.

Clarke Griffin is a major character in the first, second, third, and fourth seasons. She is portrayed by starring cast member Eliza Taylor and debuts in the series premiere.
Clarke is part of the original 100 and was sent to juvenile lockup as an accessory to the crimes of her father. On the Ark, prior to being locked up, Clarke was a medical apprentice working under her mother, Abigail Griffin. Once on Earth, she used these skills to serve as the primary medic for the Delinquents. After the deaths of Wells Jaha and Charlotte, Clarke becomes a co-leader of the Delinquents alongside Bellamy Blake. While in charge, Clarke is forced to make life-and-death decisions, like killing Finn Collinsout of mercy to help protect the Delinquents from both internal and external threats by creating an alliance with the Grounders.

After Clarke sets off on her own in the second season finale she gets referred to as Wanheda by the Grounders in the third season and is being hunted. Upon her arrival in Polis she becomes the ambassador to the Sky People for Commander Lexa. But after the death of her now deceased lover and the Nightblood Ontario becoming Commander by ruse, Clarke leaves Polis as the Flamekeeper to reunite with her people, determined to fight A.L.I.E. by finding a nightblood, Luna.

Lexa is a recurring character in the second and third seasons. She is portrayed by cast member Alycia Debnam-Carey and debuts in Fog of War.
​
As the Commander of the 12 Clans, Lexa is the reason the twelve clans united to fight against Mount Weather and without her, the Coalition would fail. Prior to that, the Ice Nation was the biggest threat to the alliance of the twelve clans.

Lexa sends Tristan to take over from Anya during The Woods Clan-Sky People Conflict. After the rest of The Ark lands, Lexa puts out a bounty for all Sky People and Thelonious Jaha is taken captive. After the massacre in Tondc, Lexa releases Jaha and demands the rest of the Sky People flee or die. When Clarkeoffers a way to save Reapers, Lexa reconsiders and only demands Finn Collins' death instead in compensation for the massacre.

Lexa and Clarke soon start working hard together to form an alliance and free their people from Mount Weather. They come up with a plan to take down Mount Weather's defenses and invade the Mountain. Emerson approaches Lexa and offers a deal from Dante Wallace to free all of Lexa's people if she leaves and they never encroach upon the Mountain again. Lexa takes the deal, saving her people but leaving behind Clarke and the rest of the Sky People.

Lexa finds Clarke at the beginning of the Season Three, Clarke agrees to forgive her and they become friends again and lovers later.
